Tribes - Connecting With Real People

Not getting the referrals you want yet? Maybe you don't have the relationships you need! One cool way of building relationships is through tribes. Facebook has some - like Tribe Syndication Association and Tribe Syndication Network. But there are a ton of tribes out there all over the place. But the basic idea of tribes is essentially the same - connect first with a small group - say 5 - people that are like minded and syndicate each other's content. What does that mean? Share their blogs, digg them, retweet their tweets, comment on their blogs - and basically just connect with them as if they were real people (gasp!). And then expand from there - some suggest from outside the tribe, some suggest connecting in various ways with others from industries like yours and even not like yours (not all connections happen in a straight line you know - sometimes things happen through a friend of a friend).

This is based on the idea though that you have quality content and that you share other's quality content. If you just post junk and share any junk, then it doesn't really work - because your followers won't care about that and will just tune out and the benefit is lost. So you've got to spend some time developing your content and your ability to discern quality as well.

This place is wild. I am talking to people and getting traffic and making some good contacts. I have already had people sign-up for my services. Definitely would recommend giving this one some of your time and attention. So far I have not paid for any of the upgraded things - so I am getting sign-ups from the free choices - I imagine sign-ups even faster from some of the paid stuff. However, still testing it, so going slow!

IM Faceplate and ApSense

Ok here's another two places to hang out and find some referrals! IMfaceplate and Apsense. ApSense has been around awhile and I just didn't spend as much time there, distracted with other things, but I have gotten some excellent, long-term members to sites from there and heard good things from other people as well. So definitely check it out.

As ImFaceplate - it's just the happening place to be. People are hanging out and messaging each other all over the place. I got 5 sign-ups to various exchanges just yesterday from there and I was hardly on there at all and not that popular yet - so it's explosively powerful.

Social Networking beyond blogging

Yet another way you can get referrals is through the billions (it seems) of social networking sites out there - even beyond connecting on blogs :)

For example, you can connect with me on Facebook! And you know, if you send me a friend request, I will most likely accept. And if you start trying to connect with me on a real basis - responding to status updates or notes or wall comments or other posts, a conversation develops. And then, you've made a real contact who may sign up for one of your programs, services or recommend you to someone else when the time arises. Just don't shove yourself down their throat!

Or you can connect on our more corporate-y Twitter or my personal-y Twitter. I'll do my best to follow you back and check your tweets. And I would hope vice-versa. Just don't only post your business stuff - say something fun once in a while, retweet the cool things other people are saying (that's like sharing what they are saying with others) and respond to comments people make.

So have fun, get some referrals, but be human and not crazy business bots about it.

Credit Based Safelists

Even more effective than regular safelists (see previous post) are the credit based ones. For these, you get mail and have to click on links to get credits. You are reading the email and viewing the site - 2 good chances to try and get somebody interested. You then use the credits you have accumulated to send your own messages. Some of them also have a regular safelist feature as well - be careful with this, some of them prohibit mailing the same message consecutively with the credit based system as with the non-credit based one. Some have log-in bonuses - you view a member's ad for credit before you reach the member area. Usually you can take advantage of that boost in credits once a day. Some give you extra credits for promoting the site. Often banner ads are available for purchase.

It's best to have a gmail account because you will get a lot of mail. You can easily set up labels/filters to sort these messages for you.

Here are a few to get you started!

Safelists - Non-credit based

Safelists come in 2 major varieties - credit based and non-credit based. Credit-based, as the name implies, means you have to click on links to earn credits. These are then traded in for your mailings. Non credit-based is the old way of doing safelists. I say old way - but there are a ton of these still around.

Does anybody get referrals through the non-credit based ones? Yes. But...it depends a lot more on the subject lines for your emails. Because what seems to happen is people filter those to separate folders and then skim through the titles to see if there are any they want to read. So your subject lines/titles are extremely important. I've sent the exact same ad with varying titles and got a huge difference in responses.

There are so many of these that it would be impossible for me to list them all, but I will list some to get you started. I will add more as time goes on :) Safelists you can sign-up for free, and then upgrade if you decide you like it, want banner impressions, more frequent mailing schedule, etc...

Listbuilders can work to get you referrals! Most of the time the list is only accessible through whatever site you are signing up with - for example, you can only access your List Wiz members through the List Wiz interface. However, you can e-mail these people your advertisements through these systems. Some are incentivized for them to click, for example, they may get credits they can then use to grow their own list on the site. We've gotten some sign-ups from these kinds of programs for various things and we fully expect that you will too! It's a good way to reach people that you may not be getting though your other advertising efforts.

SuperListExplode - as a free member, you will need to view 5 ads every day. Everyone that signs up for the site will then become part of your list which you can mail weekly. It doesn't matter who refers them - if you view the ads, you will get ALL the sign-ups from all sources for the day. If you view more than 5 ads, you can use the extra points for banner advertising on the site. Pretty cool.

ListWonderExtreme - as a free member, you will need to view 5 ads every day. Everyone that signs up for the site will then become part of your list which you can mail weekly. It doesn't matter who refers them - if you view the ads, you will get ALL the sign-ups from all sources for the day. If you view more than 5 ads, you can use the extra points for text ad advertising on the site. Again - pretty cool.

Trade-A-List - as a free member, you will need to view 10 ads each day you want to send an advertisement. You will then be able to pick from one of 4 lists to send your ad to and it will go to all members of that list. You can pick a different list every day!

List-Wiz - When you log-in, you will have a choice of games you can play. These get you contacts or points. Points can be traded in for contacts or for banner ads or other advertising on the site. The contacts you gain become part of your list on the site and you can send them your ads.

HotSpotMailer - When you read ads on this site, you gain points. Each point will count as 1 person to whom you can send an ad. You can choose to read the ads on the site or get them in your regular e-mail. Each ad that you read is worth a varying amount of points - could be 15, could be 500!

Green E-list - When you read ads on this site, you gain points. Each point will count as 1 person to whom you can send an ad. You can choose to read the ads on the site or get them in your regular e-mail. Each ad that you read is worth a varying amount of points - could be 15, could be 300!

Downline Builder Direct - On this site, as a free member, you can send an ad every 30 days to 200 random members.

List Joe - You will receive ads in your e-mail, as you read them you accumulate points. You can e-mail people about 1x a week using the points, usually around 2000. They change with promotions to increase/decrease that number and how often you can mail relatively frequently, so check in on admin e-mails to make sure you are getting the most members mailed!

The List Auction - This is another site where you get points for reading and clicking on the links in the e-mails you receive. You can then trade those in to e-mail people, again about 1x a week.

PTC Advertising

PTC or Paid-To-Click advertising can be another source of referrals. When you click on the ads with these sites you earn cash or points. Some sites pay out cash which you can then use to buy advertising on their site. Some let you directly transfer your cash into advertising credits. Some have you convert the points into the kind of advertising you want such as links or banners. Here's a few to get you started! By the way, these are free for you to sign-up and click on ads!

Traffic Exchanges

Traffic exchanges can be an effective advertising resource. Remember to try to use splash pages, especially ones you make, to gain the most referrals. There are, we think, conservatively, a gazillion exchanges out there now :), so there will be no attempt made to list them all, but we'll list a few to get you going. The list of exchanges are geared towards manual exchanges since you are more likely to gain referrals from them than from auto-exchanges.

A few tips:

Build up your credits so you can launch a big campaign is often effective.
Launching campaigns on multiple exchanges at the same time can dramatically increase effectiveness
Remember to utilize the banner ads and text ads that most exchanges provide. Some will even display banners/text ads free as long as you have credits. Others require that you assign your credits. Still others ask you to trade in credits for banners/text ads.
Some exchanges have team surfing - this can be a great opportunity to network and meet people and help each other out with all your businesses.
Don't forget to explore the exchange - some have additional features like games, blogs, downline builders, etc that you can use to further promote yourself and your opportunities.
Read the e-mails from the owners - there will often be extra credits to be gained by clicking a link or special offers or notices not otherwise available
Pay attention while surfing - there are often bonus pages or bonus links to be clicked to receive credits, cash or banner or text impressions!
